In the tradition of the Q’ero shamans from the high mountains of Peru, the south is a place of deep transformation. It is the beginning of the journey on the medicine wheel. Just as the warm sun sits in the southern sky, this direction brings the heat we need to shed our past. At the Chacana Spiritual Center, we teach that the south is where we learn to walk with beauty and let go of the things that no longer serve us.
Shedding Your Past Like a Serpent

The power animal of the south is the serpent. If you have ever seen a snake in the tall grass you might have noticed how they move. Snakes do not carry luggage. When they outgrow their old skin, they simply leave it behind in one piece and keep moving. In our own lives, we often hold onto old stories or wounds that make us feel heavy.

The medicine of the south teaches us to shed our personal past just like the serpent sheds its skin. This does not mean we forget what happened to us. Instead, it means we stop letting those old stories define who we are today. By letting go of the "old skin" of our past, we can walk on the earth with a lighter step.
Walking with Beauty on the Earth

Once we have shed our old skins, we learn how to walk with beauty. This is a way of living where we stay connected to nature and our own hearts. Think about the feeling of peace you get while walking through a park under the shade of the pine trees. That sense of connection is what the south is all about.
The Q’ero people believe that when we change our internal world, the world around us begins to change too. The south helps us find our "inner child" or our most authentic self. It reminds us that we are part of the earth, not separate from it. When we heal our own wounds, we stop reacting to life out of fear and start responding with love.
Starting Your Journey at the Chacana Spiritual Center
Beginning a spiritual path can feel like a big step, but the south reminds us that every journey starts with a single movement. It is about being present in the moment and trusting the process of growth. At the Chacana Spiritual Center, we offer a space where you can explore these ancient teachings and find your own rhythm.
By working with the direction of the south, you gain the strength to face your shadows and turn them into sources of power. It is a beautiful way to reconnect with your purpose and find balance in a busy world.
