What is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that is also believed to promote healing. The name comes from the Japanese words "rei" (universal) and "ki" (life force energy). Practitioners use a technique called palm healing or hands-on healing, where they place their hands lightly on or just above a person's body to channel this "universal life energy" to facilitate balance and healing. It is often used as a complementary therapy alongside conventional medical treatments to help reduce pain, anxiety, and fatigue, and to promote overall well-being.
Reiki is not limited by physical proximity. Through the sacred symbols and practices taught in Level II, practitioners learn how to offer healing energy across any distance — to loved ones, life situations, future events, or emotional patterns needing support. Distance Reiki is one of the core teachings Patti shares with her students, helping them develop confidence, intuition, and a deeper relationship to Holy Fire® energy.
Usui Holy Fire® Reiki III introduces a high-frequency, more spiritually advanced energy called "Holy Fire." The process of transferring the Holy Fire energy to students is done through a method called "Placements" and "Ignitions" instead of the traditional attunements. This process is said to be guided directly by the Holy Fire energy, which creates a direct and pure connection between the student and the source of the energy,. This direct connection is believed to ensure a purer energetic experience for the student and a faster pace of spiritual purification and growth.
While Holy Fire® Reiki builds upon the foundation of Usui Reiki and includes the Usui symbols and techniques, its unique energy and teaching method are what distinguish it as an evolved system.

The Holy Fire® Reiki III energy is described by practitioners as being noticeably more refined, coming from a higher level of consciousness, and being both powerful and gentle. Each level of Holy Fire® Reiki, taught by Patti Berlin, LMT — Usui Holy Fire® III Reiki Master Teacher, includes guided healing experiences that come directly from the energy itself. These meditative processes — such as the Ocean of Holy Love — promote deep purification, release of old patterns, and a sense of being embraced by a loving, intelligent light.
The Difference Between Usui Reiki and Holy Fire® Reiki III
The main difference between basi Usui Reiki and Usui Holy Fire Reiki lies in their origin, energy quality, and initiation process.
Usui Reiki is the original system established by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century, which emphasizes channeling the "universal life force energy" (rei-ki) through the practitioner's hands. Its lineage is traditionally traced back directly from teacher to student, using an Attunement process where the master manually transfers the energy connection.
Holy Fire Reiki is a more recent, distinct evolution introduced by William Lee Rand of the International Center for Reiki Training (ICRT) in 2014. Practitioners describe the Holy Fire energy as a more refined, powerful, and purificational vibration, often associated with a higher level of consciousness. The key difference in teaching is the use of Placements and Ignitions (instead of Attunements), where the Holy Fire energy is believed to come directly from a divine source to the student, bypassing the teacher's energy entirely. This is thought to result in a purer and quicker connection to the healing source.
